Fighting Childhood Hunger in Pinellas County, One Little Tummy at a Time
1 in 8 Children in Pinellas County Face Hunger
In Pinellas County, child hunger is a critical issue. Recent data reveals that 1 in 8 children (approximately 12.6%) face food insecurity, lacking consistent access to sufficient food for a healthy life.

Half of Pinellas County’s students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, reflecting their families' low-income status. Children born into food-insecure households often experience low birth weight, developmental delays, and struggle with focusing and learning in school. They also face chronic physical and behavioral health challenges.
All children should have access to healthy food. Sadly, some children have no idea what it is like to have decent meals every day – they do not even know they deserve it. However, without an intentional social shift prioritizing the importance of good nourishment and consistent healthy diets, the issue of childhood hunger is destined to plague future generations.
